The oxidation state of the respiratory carriers and the partial reactions of oxidation phosphorylation.

This paper describes experiments on the effect of the oxidation-reduction state of the respiratory carriers in fragments of mitochondria on three partial or intermediate reactions of the oxidative phosphorylation mechanism which occur in the absence of net electron transport, namely the adenosine 5’-triphosphateinorganic Pa2 exchange reaction (I), the ATPase and dinitrophenol-stimulated ATPase activity (2), and the ATP-ADP exchange reaction (3). Evidence has already been presented that these three reactions reflect the activity of intermediate enzymatic steps in the coupling process, which in its simplest terms has been postulated (4, 1, 5) to consist of the following reaction sequence :
